Sandy Launius Mann Exhibit

Sandy Launius Mann

Sandy Launius Mann is the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artist in January.  The public is invited to the opening reception on January 7, 2018, 1:30-3:30 pm, to view her delightful paintings.  Admission is free.

Sandy Launius Mann comes from a family of draftsmen, artisans, musicians, and teachers of art. She received a degree in Interior Design from Southern Institute and worked for 25 years with an extensive list of clients from Huntsville to Panama City.   Sandy worked as a commercial interior designer for Henry Coshatt in Birmingham, working on such projects as St. Jude Hospital. She then became a lighting designer, working for Mayer Lighting and during that time worked with Mother Angelica on the Shrine of the Most Blessed located in Hanceville, AL.  In the 90s Sandy became a freelance designer working through her family’s 80-year-old business, Launius Furniture, in Warrior.  In 2013, she opened her gallery/studio in Warrior, a working studio where she also offers art, drawing, and pottery classes and workshops.

Sandy Launius Mann is an award winning abstract artist.  Her work was accepted to the Energen art show in 2015; she won the Marshal County Fine Arts Award in 2016; and she has had solo exhibits at Artists on the Bluff, the Lowe Mill Arts in Huntsville, the Guntersville Museum and Cultural Art Center, and Mountain Valley Art Gallery.  In 2017 Sandy won first and second place in the National Pen Women’s Art Exhibit in Birmingham for her acrylic paintings “Obscured Souls” and “Separations Mist”.  In December 2017 she exhibited with DHGallery of International Artists at Spectrum Miami.

Sandy’s art is best described as non-reference abstract. She enjoys creating art that is completely out of her head spurred by emotions with hidden meaning and images. The latest collection by Sandy is “Mind Games” which uses a scraping technique while keeping the paint wet for hours, letting it dry and then creating objects that are hidden in the paint. In a sense Sandy lets the paint determine a lot of how the piece of work turns. Becoming totally immersed in the canvas finding her emotions take over and the piece when finished reads like a daily.  “At the studio I’m an avid believer in zero stress to produce the best possible art.  I have no contracts, no set rules and we just go with the flow. Everything is about the art and I’ve found that works best for me, you, and the studio.”

Ms. Mann’s paintings will be on exhibit through February 2, 2018.  You may view more of her work at: https://www.facebook.com/sandymannart

Jim Langley Exhibit

Jim Langley is the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artist in August.  The public is invited to his opening reception and one-man show on Sunday, August 6 at 1:30-3:30.  Admission is free.

The reception/show will feature the art and storytelling of former Leeds resident, Jim Langley.  Many of his paintings depict scenes and personalities from the Leeds and Birmingham area including the Alabama Theater; area churches, businesses, historic buildings and houses; and personalities such as Charles Barkley and Harry the Hat.  Proceeds from sales and donations will benefit the Leeds Art Council as well as Day Camp Scholarships for disadvantaged children at YMCA Camp Hargis.

The Delmont Show is a 30-minute “pure-dee Alabama” performance based on Langley’s book, Delmont’s Slang Blade, 1000 of the Best Sayings in the State of Alabama. Jim’s interest in Southern sayings started many years ago and the book contains a portion of his collection. Langley contends that everyone needs to have a favorite Southern Saying in their back pocket to pull out and use at the proper occasion. Quips include such as “The more people I meet, the more I like my dog,” or “Smiling like a dead pig in sunshine.” Come let Delmont tell you what that one means!

Mr. Langley, originally from Vernon in Lamar Co., AL, is now a resident of the Ross Bridge section of Hoover. He is married to the former Ann Whitehead of Nashville, TN. Jim graduated from Jacksonville State University with a degree in Political Science and from the University of Oklahoma with a Master’s in Public Administration. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate receiving an Army commission in 1971, and served active duty tours in Alaska, Fort Sill OK, and Korea, before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserves.

During his civilian career, Mr. Langley spent 15 years with BellSouth Communications and had shorter professional associations with Dowzer Electric, SITEL, DES and AIDS Alabama. In retirement, Langley has become a prolific writer, artist and storyteller. He is well known for his book on Oak Hill, the oldest cemetery in Birmingham, and walking tours of the cemetery. He has also led many trips and tours for Hoover Seniors the last few years including local history tours in Birmingham and Hoover, tours of important places in our local Civil Rights history, and tours of Red Mountain Park. Amber Orr Exhibit

Orr, AmberAmber Orr is the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artist in June.  The public is invited to the opening reception on June 4, 2017, 1:30-3:30 pm, to view her delightful art work.  Admission is free.

Amber Orr is a Birmingham artist.  She is a 2007 graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing with a minor in art history from The University of Montevallo.  One of her recent portraits graced the front cover of the fall 2016 issue of the Birmingham Arts Journal.

The artist says, “My work celebrates the internal and external relationship of self-discovery.  I am being honest about who I was, am, and choose to become.  I haven’t always loved what I looked like on the outside.  Self-criticism left me feeling ugly, left me believing I was never enough.  During this endless cycle of frustration, I discovered I was the ultimate cause of my own unhappiness.  Constantly belittling myself only kept me thinking negatively.  Once I respected myself, inch by inch and day by day, I gained confidence.”

“The key to my happiness is positive thinking.  Instead of perfecting my appearance, I have chosen to accept it.  My hair is kinky, my skin is black, I have scars and marks times more.  I want to encourage you to embrace who you are.  We are all beautifully imperfect human beings.  That is worthy to be celebrated.”

Ms. Orr’s paintings will be on exhibit through June 30, 2017.  You can follow her art journey on Instagram: @mizzambero

Karla Shackleford Conway Exhibit

KarlaKarla Shackleford Conway is the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artist in May.  The public is invited to the opening reception on May 7, 2017, 1:30-3:30 pm, to view her delightful paintings.  Admission is free.

Karla Shackleford Conway is a native of Birmingham who now lives in Lincoln, Alabama, on Lake Logan Martin.  After a long career in advertising and public relations, where she particularly enjoyed the design and graphics side of the business, she took a one-time acrylic painting class.  The next day, she bought a package of canvasses and a starter set of paints and has been painting ever since.

Since 2010, Karla has taken classes from local artists and from well-known Maine landscape artist Tim Gagnon.  But mostly she has painted on her own, watching videos on specific techniques and studying the works of the painters she most admires.

While she constantly experiments with different subjects and styles, Karla’s favorite subject is birds, which became a fascination of hers when she moved to Lake Logan Martin.

In 2015, she retired from fundraising and promotion with the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega.  In retirement, Karla regularly leads painting workshops to benefit the Pell City Christian Love Pantry, a food resource founded by St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church which hosts the painting classes.

A selection of her paintings can be found on her website:  www.studiokarla.com

Ms. Conway’s paintings will be on exhibit through June 3, 2017.  For more information, please visit her website at www.studiokarla.com

Deborah & Sam Pezzillo Exhibit

Deborah and Sam Pezzillo are the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artists
in April.  Please join us for the opening reception on April 2,
2017, 1:30-3:30 pm, to view their beautiful photographs.  Admission is
free.

Since moving to Leeds in 1995, Deborah has enjoyed taking photographs
of the wildlife, both plants and animals, on her farm. “They are in and
of themselves magical,” she notes. “Their appearance can transform an
otherwise ordinary day into pure joy. I am at once so excited when I
hear my husband beckoning me to, ‘Come quickly, Deb, and bring your
camera.’“

Her photos have been published in the October 2014 issue of the
National Wildlife Federation magazine and were recently shown at the
Flight and Flutter Fest at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve. Her photo
of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on Purple Coneflower can be viewed on
Al.com. She has also published a book of her nature photos with
favorite quotes titled, Ambassadors of Life. It will be on sale along
with framed photos and photos on canvas.

Sam has had a life-long interest in photography and once taught it in a
January term at Birmingham-Southern College, from which he retired in
2010. He has not intentionally limited his subject matter, but an
additional interest in world-wide travel and his academic specialty in
the classical world have allowed him to concentrate on architectural
and monumental subjects. But, like Debbie, birds and nature have
also had their attraction. Sam says that what he likes about
photography is that it makes one look at both the broad view and the
details of what is presented to your eyes. That allows for finding
surprising items in apparently mundane scenes.

The Pezzillos’ photographs will be on exhibit through May 5.

The Arts Center is located at 8140 Parkway Drive, in downtown Leeds.
The gallery is open during events.  In case of inclement weather, call

Wes Carter Exhibit

Wes Carter opening reception on March 5, 2017 @ 1:30-3:30 pm.

Wes Carter is the Leeds Arts Council’s featured artist in March.  The public is invited to the opening reception on March 5, 2017, 1:30-3:30 pm, to view his delightful paintings.  Admission is free.

Wes Carter paints primarily in oil, but he also enjoys watercolor, gouache, and pen and ink.  He is attracted to many different types and styles of art and paints landscapes and still lifes and the occasional abstract.  Over the last 5 years he has dedicated himself to painting and has focused almost exclusively on landscapes and still lifes.  Many of his paintings are based on his experiences and impressions of places he has been.  His painting is aided by photography but never slavishly copied from photographs.  Other paintings are created completely from his imagination.

Mr. Carter’s education is in the field of Graphic Design–his full time day job.  As a painter he is largely self-taught, but he strives to improve his skills through participation in workshops and learning from his experienced peers.  He participated in the Birmingham Artwalk from 2013-present; the Magic City Art Connection in 2014; and Art on Ruffner Mountain in 2013.  He is a member of the Alabama Plein Air Artists.

“In my paintings I hope to convey the sense of awe and wonder that the natural world inspires in me.  For me, a painting is successful when it has an implied sense of narrative, when the viewer feels that they are glimpsing only a small part of a larger story that they will never completely comprehend.”

Mr. Carter’s paintings will be on exhibit through March 31, 2017.  For more information, please visit his website at wescarterart.com or find him on Facebook.
